Steve Johnston, Senior Warden

Steve Johnston serves as the Senior Warden at Saint James Episcopal Church with a clear vision to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, uphold our baptismal covenant by striving for justice and peace, and to foster the dignity of every individual. He is dedicated to enhancing Saint James’s role as a leading Episcopal presence on James Island.

A native of Beaufort and a long-time resident of James Island, Steve has laid down strong roots in South Carolina. Together with Carol, his wife of 13 years, they enjoy family life with their three daughters, one son, and five grandchildren. Travel is a shared passion, with journeys spanning six continents and over 40 countries. They love to take the boat out and enjoy the Lowcountry. He also likes to get in some golf when he has the time!

Steve’s life is marked by service and leadership. He proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy and later channeled his commitment to care into a nursing career, earning a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from MUSC. His extensive career at the Charleston VA Medical Center culminated in a role focused on Compliance and Business Integrity, reflecting his deep commitment to ethical healthcare.

In May 2023, he completed a four-year program administered by The University of the South, Sewanee, TN in Education for Ministry. This program is designed to prepare students for Lay Ministry in the Episcopal Church.
